Lit Fest - Writing Workshop for Young Adults with Nicole Sarrocco

Autobiography: Story and the Self

Writer and memoirist Harry Crews once said that nothing ever dies in a society of storytellers. It’s not just our identity or personality we convey when we tell a story about ourselves – each time we give part of ourselves, we knit our souls together. And your story doesn’t have to take your reader to the highest achievements or the lowest despair; it’s our daily small trips and triumphs that connect us as human.

It’s how you tell that story that will captivate. In this workshop, we’ll look at the tools successful memoirists use to depict the truth beyond the facts of our lives, the universal we can find in our most personal moments. We’ll talk about the roots of authenticity in word choice, in the pacing of your story, essay, or poem, and we’ll complete one or two very short writing exercises during the workshop.
