Don Dixon / John Bare / Brigid Kaelin - Stories and Songs From the Lassie James Novels

Page 158 Books will welcome author/photographer John Bare, musician/producer Don Dixon, and musician Brigid Kaelin for an evening of stories and songs from the Lassie James mysteries.

John Bare’s 2021 murder mystery, Fair-Skinned Brunette With the Porcelain Shine, introduced Lassie James, a journalist and part-time songwriter back on campus at UNC finishing a graduate degree. The second installment in the mystery series, My Biscuit Baby, arrives in January 2024. From the Lassie James lyrics in the books, John and Don Dixon co-wrote songs for the album, Lassie James Songbook Vol. I, which Dixon produced at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitoirum.

A writer and photographer, John was born in Winston-Salem and attended public schools in Garner, NC, where his parents were educators. He studied radio, television and motion pictures at the UNC, where he developed an appreciation for biscuits, whiskey, and live music. John shares his house with rescue dogs Winston and Isadora.

John first saw Don Dixon perform at an Arrogance show 40-plus years ago at The Pier, a club in what was then the Cameron Village underground. John photographed the 2017 and 2018 Arrogance reunion shows at Kings in Raleigh. Dixon has devoted his entire life to the popular song. Whether working as a singer, songwriter, musician or producer, he has always tried to capture the essence of his life in the moment. Dixon’s writing, production and session credits include astroPuppees, Baby Shaker, Richard Barone, Jim Brock, Mark Bryan, Kim Carnes, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Caitlin Cary, Joe Cocker, the Connells, Counting Crows, Marshall Crenshaw, Pat DiNizio, the Edison Project, Fetchin’ Bones, GB Leighton, The Golden Palominos, Guadalcanal Diary, Hootie and the Blowfish, In Tua Nua, Marti Jones, Tommy Keene, Let’s Active, James McMurtry, Moxy Fruvous, R.E.M., the Red Clay Ramblers, the Smithereens, Snagglepuss, Ronnie Spector, the Spongetones, Chris Stamey, Matthew Sweet, the X-Teens and dozens more.

Brigid Kaelin is a musician, artist, and writer who has traveled the world performing her own songs, as well as being a musical sideman for folks like Cowboy Jack Clement, Dan Bern, and Elvis Costello. Her songs primarily lean toward folk/bluegrass, though her training is in jazz piano. Brigid is a recent breast cancer survivor, a single-malt lover, and a mother of two adorable SAG-AFTRA film actors who take up most of her time.

Brigid is also one of the world's most virtuosic musical saw players and often records film scores or album overdubs from her home studio in Kentucky, as well as wild saw arrangments like this 30-part saw recording of "Happy Birthday" in a minor key. As a visual artist, Brigid has paintings hanging in homes across America, as well as in government buildings in Kentucky and Switzerland. She created a painting of the State Capitol for the 62nd Kentucky gubernatorial inauguration. As a writer, she's had bylines in Salon, Keller, ScaryMommy, and she's hard at work on several books. Her first print book, a history of Lakeside Swim Club, will be published by Butler Books in summer 2024.
